From Pruning to Full Tree Removal: No Job Too Big or Small for Elite Trees

by Paul Thomas - / 30.06.2025

They say that the work of a tree surgeon is the most dangerous job in the world. And they’re not wrong!

Not only do tree surgery services involve working at height, but they combine the instability of tree work with heavy machinery, wielding chainsaws and other tools while suspended from a tree.

But it’s not all loud and brash outdoor work. The role of a tree surgeon requires a balance of hands-on and practical work, with behind-the-scenes support; diagnosing health issues, identifying key factors in how well a tree thrives in specific climates, and taking steps to make a tree safer.

In fact, one of the biggest responsibilities for tree surgeons is knowing what to do in very specific and often unique circumstances. Here are just some of the jobs that a local tree surgeon can take on, and how they are trained to navigate different situations.

Knowing What Trees Need – and When!

Tree surgeons can identify the root cause of an issue that’s affecting the look or growth of a tree and can make recommendations that will preserve its health.

This is important because not only do trees require certain surroundings in order to thrive, but a lack of health can make them dangerous to be around. Trees that are not suitable for their environment are more likely to drop branches and threaten the safety of the immediate area around them.

What tree surgeons are trained to do, that no other landscape worker can do with quite the same care and attention, is recognise the issue affecting a tree and choose from a range of remedial steps. Sometimes, pruning is sufficient; other times, a tree will require a full felling, complete with licence application – all while navigating TPOs and other protective measures.

Which is where the next part of this article comes in…

From Heavy Machinery to Lengthy Admin Work

One of the most underrated things that a tree surgeon can do is manage the admin involved in tree work.

With many trees held under TPOs and other orders, with various regulations attached to them, carrying out work around these restrictions can be challenging. A trained and experienced tree surgeon can time structural tree work so that it avoids nesting season and falls within the remit of a protective order, submitting the right applications and notices to ensure full legality.

All this, while also carrying out the physical work in a safe and efficient manner.

When Do You Need a Tree Surgeon?

Suffice to say, tree surgeons don’t just turn up on the day and get the job done. They get involved a lot sooner, diagnosing the root cause of an issue affecting your tree(s) and ensuring that all the permissions are in place before commencing ground work.

Whether your project is big or small, your local tree surgeons are trained and able to help bring your outdoor space back to life.
